How to Create and Manage Shopping Lists

Last updated: 2026-03-20

Quick Answer

Family Values gives you a full-featured shopping list manager at familyvalu.es. You can create as many lists as you need, add and edit items, rename lists, and delete them when you're done. Everything lives on the /shopping-lists page, with a sidebar for navigating between lists and a main panel for working with items.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Navigate to the /shopping-lists page in Family Values. On the left, you'll see a sidebar showing all your existing shopping lists with their names and item counts.

  1. Create a new list by clicking the "New list" button at the top of the sidebar. You'll be prompted to enter a name for your list. Type something descriptive like "Weekly Groceries" or "Party Supplies" and confirm. A toast notification will confirm your list was created.

  2. Select a list by clicking its name in the sidebar. The right panel will display all items in that list, along with a search bar, progress bar, and action buttons.

  3. Add items using the "Add item" form at the top of the list panel. Enter the item name (required), and optionally add an amount and unit. The item saves automatically once added.

  4. Rename a list by clicking the pencil icon next to the list name. Edit the name inline and confirm to save.

  1. Delete a list by clicking the delete button next to it in the sidebar. A confirmation dialog will appear to prevent accidental deletion. Once confirmed, the list and all its items are permanently removed.

  2. Merge all lists by clicking the "Merge all lists" button if you want to combine everything into a single list. This creates one list named "Merged list" containing all items from every list. Note that this action cannot be undone.

Tips

  • Keep separate lists for different stores or shopping trips. For example, maintain one list for your regular supermarket and another for a specialty store.
  • Use the search bar within a list to quickly find specific items when your list gets long.
  • On mobile, the sidebar becomes a drawer that slides in from the side. Tap to open it, select a list, and the drawer closes to show your items full-screen.
  • If a list name gets outdated, rename it with the pencil icon rather than creating a new one -- your items stay intact.
