How to Save a Recipe from a PDF
Last updated: 2026-03-20
Quick Answer
Have a recipe saved as a PDF -- maybe from an online cookbook, a meal delivery service, or a friend's email attachment? Family Values has a dedicated PDF tab in the Magic AI Importer that reads the document and extracts the recipe for you. Upload the file at familyvalu.es, and you'll have an editable recipe in moments.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
-
Locate the PDF file on your device. This might be a downloaded cookbook chapter, a recipe emailed to you, or a PDF saved from a website.
-
Open the Magic AI Importer in Family Values and select the PDF tab (the File icon).
-
Upload your PDF by dragging and dropping it onto the upload zone, or click the "Choose PDF" button to browse your files. The file must be under 5MB.
-
Wait while the AI reads the PDF content. It extracts text from the document, identifies the recipe structure, and parses out the title, ingredients, instructions, cooking times, and servings.
-
Review the imported recipe. If autosave is enabled in your settings, the recipe saves to your collection automatically. If autosave is off, you'll see the recipe editor with all the extracted data pre-filled, ready for you to review and tweak before saving.
Tips
- The PDF tab works with both text-based PDFs and scanned/image PDFs. If the PDF contains selectable text, extraction is faster and more accurate. Scanned PDFs work too -- the AI uses image recognition.
- For large cookbook PDFs with many recipes, the AI works best when you narrow things down. If possible, extract just the page or pages with the recipe you want before uploading.
- Recipe PDFs from meal kit services (like HelloFresh, Blue Apron, etc.) import beautifully since they follow a consistent, clean format.
- If the PDF is password-protected, you'll need to remove the protection first before uploading.
- Don't have a PDF but have the recipe as plain text in a document? Copy the text and use the Text tab instead -- just paste it in and click "Import text recipe."
- After importing, you can edit every field. Add your own notes, adjust serving sizes, or swap out ingredients to make the recipe your own.
